The Department of Radiation Oncology is pleased to announce the appointment of Drs. Mark Artz, Adam Holtzman, Natalie Lockney, and Ray Mailhot as Assistant Professors.
“We are fortunate to have recruited these exceptional doctors to serve our patients, our department, and the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute,” said Dr.Paul Okunieff, Chair of the UF Department of Radiation Oncology. “They have received the highest praises from former and present colleagues and we look forward to the many ways in which they will be contributing to our clinical, academic, and research efforts.”
Dr. Mark Artz (top row, left), Clinical Assistant Professor, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he contributed to the development of superconducting cyclotrons and gantries for proton therapy. Most recently, as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Tennessee and Medical Physicist Fellow at the Provision Proton Therapy Center, Knoxville, Dr. Artz was responsible for clinical commissioning and operation of IBA and ProNova Proton and Eleckta Photon, including treatment planning, quality assurance and clinical development. He also developed a CAMPEP Master of Science degree program in Medical Physics with the University of Tennessee College of Engineering.
While skilled in all external beam radiation modalities, Dr. Adam Holtzman (top row, right) specializes in proton therapy for skull-based and central nervous system malignancies. He received his undergraduate, medical, and residency training from the University of Florida. An established researcher, his work has been published in multiple peer-reviewed medical journals and presented at international conferences. Dr. Holtzman has received multiple awards in recognition for his dedication to clinical care, compassion and research. He was honored as Best of American Society for Radiation Oncology 57th Annual Meeting, inducted into the Gold Humanism Honors Society, and received the Outstanding Resident Educator Award.
Dr. Natalie A. Lockney (bottom row, left) joined the Radiation Oncology team on August 1 from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York City, where she served as a Resident Physician in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Previously, she completed a transitional year internship with the Baptist Health System in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Lockney received her undergraduate degree in chemistry from Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama. She attended medical school at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, where she focused in translational oncology research.
Dr. Ray Mailhot (bottom row, right) specializes in treating pediatric cancers and breast cancer. While pursuing his Master of Public Health (MPH – Quantitative Analysis) at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2011 and 2012, he received both the American Society of Clinical Oncology Conquer Cancer Fellowship Award and American Society for Radiation Oncology Minority Summer Fellowship Award. Prior to receiving his MD in 2013 at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, he was awarded the J. Max Rukes Full Tuition Merit Scholarship and was selected as a Duke Global Health Fellow, serving as a WHO intern in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Mailhot’s research has focused on health outcomes, cost-effectiveness, and global health and has been published in several peer-reviewed medical journals, including the Journal of Global Oncology, the Red Journal, Cancer, and Brachytherapy.
